Much of what later Muslims know about Muhammad's reported words, actions and approvals comes through hadith. And hadith introduce something rather important: human transmission.

They knew reports could be fabricated, mistaken or badly transmitted.

So they developed methods to investigate them.

Nobody needs to lie for a message to change.

One person misremembers.

Another paraphrases.



A third accurately repeats the paraphrase.

The fourth faithfully preserves an error he didn't create.


By the end, everyone may have been perfectly sincere.

The message can still be wrong.
