the westland settlement

building an secular retreat centers

We want to acquire a piece of land and gradually transform it into an independent secular retreat.

A physical place away from noise, routine and constant digital distraction.

The objective is to create a location where small groups can temporarily disconnect from ordinary life, spend time in nature, train the body, confront silence, exchange ideas and take part in structured experiences.

The concept is intentionally simple:

10 days.

A small group.

Nature.

Discipline.

No religious doctrine.

This is not intended to become a luxury wellness resort.

It is intended to become a place for reflection, experimentation, physical discipline, community and secular ritual.

what could the retreat offer?

nature & silence

Modern life increasingly separates people from the physical environment around them.

The retreat would therefore be built around direct contact with nature: forests, open land, fire, weather, darkness, walking and outdoor living.

Nature as part of the experience.

Periods of deliberate silence would create space away from constant conversation, notifications, entertainment and social pressure.

Silence can be uncomfortable.

That is precisely why it is useful.

Participants would have moments where there is nothing to consume, nothing to scroll through and nobody demanding their attention.

Only time to observe.

body purification & digital detox

The retreat could include simple periods of controlled dietary discipline.

The purpose would not be mystical purification.

It would be an exercise in restraint, routine and awareness of everyday habits.

-Simple food.

-Water.

-Reduced sugar.

-Reduced processed food.

-Temporary fasting practices where appropriate.

The body becomes something you consciously observe rather than something you continuously satisfy.

Phones and digital media dominate a significant part of modern attention.

Certain periods of the retreat could therefore be deliberately screen-free.

No endless feeds.

No constant notifications.

No algorithm deciding what deserves your attention.

For a limited time, attention becomes yours again.

body training

The body would be an essential part of the experience.

Possible activities could include:

  • hiking
  • calisthenics
  • mobility
  • stretching
  • stick training
  • balance exercises
  • endurance challenges
  • outdoor physical work

The objective is not bodybuilding or competition.

It is to rediscover the connection between effort, discomfort, capability and mental discipline.

breath & focus & fire

Structured breathing, concentration and attention exercises could form another part of the retreat.

These practices do not require supernatural explanations.

Breathing influences physiology.

Attention can be trained.

Repetition changes perception.

Simple exercises can therefore become tools for learning how the mind reacts to stress, boredom and concentration.

Humans have gathered around fire for hundreds of thousands of years.

At the retreat, fire could become a recurring meeting point.

Not as worship.

As a setting for conversation, silence, storytelling and reflection.

Sometimes the most effective environment for a serious discussion is simply:

darkness, people and a fire.

SOLITUDE & PERSONAL CHALLENGES

Community is important.

So is being alone.

Participants could have designated periods for walking, reading, writing or simply sitting without interaction.

The objective would not be isolation.

It would be learning whether you can spend time with your own thoughts without immediately escaping from them.

Participants could voluntarily confront controlled forms of discomfort.

-Cold.

-Fatigue.

-Silence.

-Physical effort.

-Temporary simplicity.

-Long walks.

-Reduced digital stimulation.

The objective would not be punishment.

It would be to discover how much of everyday behaviour is driven simply by the desire to avoid discomfort.

MANUAL WORK

Part of the experience could involve ordinary physical tasks.

-Preparing wood.

-Maintaining paths.

-Gardening.

-Repairing structures.

-Cooking.

-Building simple objects.

Working with other people on something tangible creates a very different relationship than simply consuming an organised activity.

The land itself should gradually become something participants help maintain and understand.

SECULAR RITUAL

Human beings create rituals in virtually every culture.

Religion does not own that behaviour.

A secular retreat can therefore experiment with symbolic actions without claiming supernatural powers.

-Fire.

-Silence.

-Fasting.

-Music.

-Shared meals.

-Personal challenges.

-Storytelling.

Transitions between different stages of the retreat.

Ritual can be understood as structured human experience rather than divine instruction.

MUSIC & RHYTHM

Music has always been used to coordinate movement, emotion and social bonding.

The retreat could include acoustic music, percussion, repetitive rhythm and collective listening sessions.

Drums in particular create something increasingly rare:

people following the same rhythm without staring at a screen.

ENCOUNTER ANOTHER HUMAN BEING

One of the simplest objectives may ultimately be one of the most important:

meet people outside your normal environment.

-Eat together.

-Train together.

-Argue.

-Laugh.

-Sit around a fire.

-Work.

-Remain silent.

Spend enough time together that conversation moves beyond ordinary social small talk.

Friendship cannot be guaranteed.

Neither can love.

But a place can create conditions in which genuine human relationships have a better chance of forming.

DISCUSSION & the library

We create a conditions in which ideas can be examined.

Possible subjects could include:

  • meaning
  • morality
  • mortality
  • religion
  • skepticism
  • freedom
  • responsibility
  • human nature
  • relationships
  • technology
  • Western history and culture
  • the future

Agreement would not be required.

Thinking would be.

A small physical library could gradually become part of the location.

-Philosophy.

-Science.

-History.

-Psychology.

-Literature.

-Religious texts.

-Criticism of religion.

-Political thought.

-Survival and practical knowledge.

Books that can be read, challenged and discussed rather than treated as sacred objects.

THE NIGHT

Modern cities have almost eliminated genuine darkness.

The retreat could make deliberate use of the night:

night walks, fire gatherings, astronomical observation and periods without artificial light.

A forest at midnight produces a very different psychological environment from a fluorescent room at midday.

That contrast is part of the experience.

A PLACE FOR EXPERIMENTATION

The retreat would not be a finished doctrine.

It would evolve.

Some practices may work.

Others may disappear

.

New traditions may develop naturally over time.

The objective is not to reproduce a monastery without God.

The objective is to investigate what remains valuable when supernatural belief is removed from the traditional retreat:

-nature.

-discipline.

-ritual.

-silence.

-physical effort.

-reflection.

-community.

THE

FIRST STEP:

THE LAND

SUPPORT THE LAND ACQUISITION

Help make this physical place possible,

you can support the land acquisition through a voluntary personal contribution.

Contributions are voluntary personal gifts,

made to support my objective of acquiring the property.

The property, if purchased, will be acquired and owned by me personally.

A contribution does not create ownership, membership, investment rights,

guaranteed access, repayment rights or entitlement to future services or events.

It is simply support for turning an idea into a physical place.

FIRST THE LAND.

THEN WE BUILD WHAT CAN EXIST THERE.

CONCEPTUAL SITE PLAN FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY

Indicative vision only. Final development subject to land availability, planning permission and local regulations.

CONCEPTUAL MASTERPLAN

This site plan is illustrative only.

It shows a possible vision of how the retreat could one day be organised if a suitable property is acquired and if local planning rules, environmental regulations, permits, infrastructure requirements and financial resources allow it.

The layout, number of cabins, buildings, paths, activity areas and other facilities shown here are not final plans and do not represent approved construction.

No specific land has yet been confirmed for this exact layout.

The final project may therefore be significantly smaller, different or organised in another way depending on:

  • the location and size of the property
  • zoning and land-use regulations
  • building permits
  • environmental restrictions
  • access and infrastructure
  • fire and safety regulations
  • sanitary requirements
  • available funding
  • ecological considerations

The approximately 30 small wooden cabins shown in this concept are therefore part of the long-term vision only.

They represent the idea of simple, modest accommodation integrated into the landscape not a commitment that 30 cabins will actually be built or legally permitted.

THIS IS A VISION, NOT A BUILDING PERMIT.

The first objective remains simple:

find and acquire suitable land.

What can actually be created on that land will only be determined afterwards, together with the applicable authorities, regulations and technical constraints.
