- Chapter IV Read -

MORALITY, LAW & CONSEQUENCES

THE QUESTION:

Some religious claims concern belief.

Others concern what people may do to one another.

Marriage. Punishment. Sex. Obedience. Freedom. Human status.

Once a religious rule affects another human being, it becomes more than theology.

It has consequences.

So we'll examine each case through the original sources, classical interpretations and the strongest arguments made in its defence.

No cherry-picking. No cheap outrage. No judging people for their religion.

For every case, we ask:

What is the rule?

Where does it come from?

How is it defended?

What is the moral objection?

What happens when it is applied?

You invoked divine authority.

Now the rule faces moral scrutiny.

human embryology

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an accurately described human embryonic development more than 1,400 years ago revealing scientific knowledge that could not have been known in the 7th century.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 23:12–14

NUTFAH // DROP

ʿALAQAH // CLINGING CLOT / SUBSTANCE

MUDGHAH // LUMP OF FLESH

BONES

BONES CLOTHED WITH FLESH

Qur'an 23:14 explicitly gives the progression from nutfah to ʿalaqah, mudghah, bones, and then bones clothed with flesh. Multiple English translations preserve that sequential construction.

Image description

THE MIRACLE ARGUMENT

The Qur'an described human embryonic development more than 1,400 years ago, centuries before modern embryology.

It begins with NUTFAH — a tiny drop.

This becomes ʿALAQAH — something that clings. The embryo attaches itself to the uterine wall, remarkably matching the Qur'anic description.

The word ʿalaqah has also been compared to a leech, both in its clinging behaviour and appearance.

Next comes MUDGHAH — something resembling a chewed lump, comparable to the segmented appearance of the developing embryo.

The Qur'an then describes the formation of bones, followed by those bones being clothed with flesh.

Muhammad lived in 7th-century Arabia.

He had no microscope.

No ultrasound.

No embryology laboratory.

Yet the Qur'an described stages hidden inside the human womb.

How could he possibly have known?

The answer is simple:

THIS KNOWLEDGE CAME FROM GOD.

Image description

Fact check

“HOW COULD ANYONE HAVE KNOWN?”

There's a rather awkward answer:

People had been writing about embryonic development for centuries.

Long before Islam, Greek medical traditions already described fetal development as a sequence of stages.

Galen of Pergamon, writing in the 2nd century CE — roughly four centuries before Muhammad — described successive phases of embryonic development.

And here's where things become particularly inconvenient.

Galen's embryology included progression from semen through early fleshy/blood-like developmental states toward differentiated structures. In On Semen, he also describes flesh growing on and around the bones.

In other words, discussing embryos in stages — including bones followed by surrounding flesh — was not knowledge that suddenly appeared in 7th-century Arabia.

Earlier Hippocratic embryology predates Galen by centuries as well.

So the famous question:

“How could Muhammad have known?”

quietly changes into:

“How could an ancient person know ideas that ancient people had already been discussing?”

Not quite the same miracle.

And we don't even need to claim that Muhammad copied Galen. Direct borrowing would require historical evidence of transmission.

The miracle argument makes the easier claim to test:

THIS KNOWLEDGE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE TO ANCIENT HUMANS.

The history of medicine is enough to kill that premise.

But there's a second problem.

The Qur'an describes:

MUDGHAH → BONES → BONES CLOTHED WITH FLESH

Modern embryology is not a production line where a naked skeleton is completed and muscle is subsequently wrapped around it.

Skeletal and muscular development are complex, overlapping developmental processes.

So the miracle has two problems:

01 // THE GENERAL IDEA ISN'T UNIQUE.

Ancient embryological theories existed centuries before Islam.

02 // THE PRECISE SEQUENCE ISN'T MODERN EMBRYOLOGY.

If an ancient description resembles other ancient embryology, that's historically interesting.

Calling it knowledge impossible for ancient humans to possess is considerably harder.

DOES THE QUR'AN DESCRIBE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN STAGES?

YES.

Qur'an 23:12–14 clearly presents a developmental sequence.

DID EMBRYOLOGICAL STAGE THEORIES EXIST BEFORE ISLAM?

YES.

Ancient medical traditions discussed embryonic development centuries before the Qur'an.

ARE THERE PARALLELS WITH PRE-ISLAMIC EMBRYOLOGY?

YES.

There are noteworthy parallels with earlier Greek embryological traditions, including Galen.

DOES THAT PROVE MUHAMMAD COPIED GALEN?

NO.

Similarity does not establish the historical route by which an idea was transmitted.

DO WE NEED TO PROVE COPYING TO CHALLENGE THE MIRACLE CLAIM?

NO.

If the argument is that such embryological ideas were impossible for ancient humans to possess, their documented existence before Islam is already fatal to that premise.

DOES THE BONES-THEN-FLESH SEQUENCE CONSTITUTE PRECISE MODERN EMBRYOLOGY?

NO.

Modern embryonic development involves overlapping formation and differentiation rather than a simplistic completed-bones-then-flesh sequence.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The Qur'an contains an ancient description of embryonic development.

Ancient embryology existing in an ancient text is not evidence of supernatural scientific foreknowledge.

And the killer question remains:

If this was advanced modern embryology hiding in plain sight since the 7th century — why did modern embryology have to be discovered first before anyone found it there?

Image description

case 02

the expanding universe

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an revealed that the universe is expanding more than 1,400 years ago a fact modern astronomy would discover only centuries later.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 51:47

“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.”

Arabic:

وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

→ QUR'AN 51:47

The crucial word is لَمُوسِعُونَ — lamūsiʿūna, from the root w-s-ʿ, associated with breadth/spaciousness. The Quranic Arabic Corpus parses it as an active participle and renders it “surely (its) Expanders.” But translations vary substantially: “make the vast extent,” “create the vastness,” “makers of things ample,” “expanded it,” and “extend it wide” all occur.

Image description

THE MIRACLE ARGUMENT

Modern cosmology has discovered something extraordinary:

THE UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING.

Galaxies are not simply sitting motionless in an eternal cosmos. On sufficiently large scales, space itself expands.

Yet more than 1,400 years ago, the Qur'an declared:

“We are its expanders.”

The Arabic word MŪSIʿŪNA comes from a root associated with expansion and vastness.

Modern translations therefore render the verse:

“We are certainly expanding it.”

Muhammad lived in the 7th century.

No modern telescope.

No spectroscopy.

No measurements of galactic redshift.

No modern cosmology.

Yet the Qur'an appears to describe an expanding cosmos centuries before science established it.

Coincidence?

Or knowledge from the Creator of the universe?

Image description

Fact check

“THERE'S JUST ONE PROBLEM.”

If Qur'an 51:47 clearly predicted modern cosmic expansion...

why didn't its classical interpreters discover an expanding universe in it?

The Arabic MŪSIʿŪNA can carry the idea of making something wide or expansive.

But that is not automatically the modern scientific proposition that cosmic space is continuously expanding.

Look at the commentators who lived before modern cosmology. AL-TABARI explains the surrounding statement as God raising the heaven like a roof with strength. His commentary does not announce a cosmological discovery about galaxies receding through expanding space.

IBN KATHIR explains mūsiʿūna by saying that God made its regions vast and raised it without pillars. Again: God's creation is immense and spacious, not a quantitative theory of cosmic expansion.

And older English translations reveal the same ambiguity:

PICKTHALL // “make the vast extent thereof”

YUSUF ALI // “create the vastness of space”

SHAKIR // “makers of things ample”

ARBERRY // “We extend it wide”

Modern translations can legitimately choose language involving “expanding.”

But translation is not cosmology.

To predict modern cosmic expansion, the verse would need to distinguish something like:

THE HEAVENS ARE VAST from THE SCALE OF THE UNIVERSE INCREASES WITH TIME.

Those are not the same scientific statement.

And here's the awkward historical test:

If the scientific information was really sitting clearly in the Arabic for fourteen centuries, Muslim astronomers had fourteen centuries to derive an expanding-universe model from it.They didn't.

Modern cosmology supplied the discovery first.

The “prediction” became obvious afterwards.

That's not foresight. That's hindsight wearing a lab coat.

DOES QUR'AN 51:47 USE LANGUAGE ASSOCIATED WITH VASTNESS OR EXPANSION?

YES.

Mūsiʿūna genuinely derives from a root concerned with breadth/expansiveness. Translating it with “expand” is therefore not simply fabricated.

DOES THE VERSE EXPLICITLY DESCRIBE THE MODERN COSMOLOGICAL EXPANSION OF SPACE?

NO.

It supplies no physical mechanism, rate, observational prediction, galactic recession or other feature distinguishing modern cosmic expansion from the much more ordinary statement that God made the heavens vast.

DID CLASSICAL COMMENTATORS CLEARLY IDENTIFY MODERN COSMIC EXPANSION IN THE VERSE?

NO.

Ibn Kathir describes God making the heavens vast; al-Tabari emphasizes their construction through divine strength. Neither presents what modern cosmology means by an expanding universe.

CAN “EXPANDING” BE A LEGITIMATE MODERN TRANSLATION?

YES.

But a linguistically possible translation is not automatically a 7th-century scientific prediction.

COULD THE MODERN DISCOVERY HAVE BEEN DERIVED UNAMBIGUOUSLY FROM THIS VERSE BEFORE MODERN COSMOLOGY?

NOT DEMONSTRATED.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The verse is compatible with interpreting God as making the heavens expansive.

The much stronger proposition —

“The Qur'an predicted the modern scientific discovery of an expanding universe”

-requires information the verse simply does not specify.

Science discovered the expansion.

Then the verse acquired a telescope.

Image description

case 03

THE big bang

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an described the Big Bang more than 1,400 years ago revealing that the heavens and the Earth were once joined together before being separated.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 21:30

THE HEAVENS + THE EARTH

WERE JOINED // RATQ

THEN SEPARATED // FATAQNĀHUMĀ

“The heavens and the earth were a joined entity, then We separated them...”

Image description

Modern cosmology tells us that the universe began in an extremely hot, dense early state and subsequently expanded.

Yet the Qur'an declared more than fourteen centuries ago:

THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH WERE ONCE JOINED TOGETHER — THEN ALLAH SEPARATED THEM.

Think about that.

Muhammad lived in 7th-century Arabia.

No modern astronomy.

No relativity.

No space telescopes.

No cosmological measurements.

Yet the Qur'an describes the cosmos beginning as something joined together, followed by a separation.

Modern science would only arrive at a comparable picture many centuries later.

The verse even immediately mentions that every living thing was made from water — another fact consistent with the fundamental importance of water to life.

How could an uneducated man in 7th-century Arabia have known the origin of the universe?

THE ANSWER //

THE CREATOR DESCRIBED HIS CREATION.

Image description

Fact check

“IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BIG BANG — PROVIDED YOU ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THE BIG BANG.?”

That's the problem.

The modern Big Bang model does not say:

“THE EARTH AND THE HEAVENS WERE TWO OBJECTS STUCK TOGETHER AND THEN PULLED APART.”

Earth did not exist at the beginning of the universe.

Our planet formed billions of years later.

So simply replacing:

“heavens and Earth were joined and We separated them”

with:

“the Qur'an predicted the Big Bang”

smuggles an enormous amount of modern cosmology into a very short ancient sentence.

And then we meet an even bigger problem:

WHAT DID MUSLIMS THINK THE VERSE MEANT BEFORE THE BIG BANG THEORY EXISTED?

Al-Tabari records several interpretations.

One says the heavens and Earth were joined and God separated them with air between them.

Another says the heavens were closed and produced no rain, while the Earth was closed and produced no vegetation; God “opened” them by sending rain and bringing forth plants.

Ibn Kathir likewise explains a tradition in which heaven and Earth were initially together and then separated, after which rain came from heaven and vegetation grew from Earth.

Notice what's missing:

NO HOT DENSE EARLY UNIVERSE.

NO EXPANDING SPACETIME.

NO COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND.

NO PRIMORDIAL NUCLEOSYNTHESIS.

And certainly no prediction that Earth would form roughly nine billion years after the universe began.

The Big Bang was discovered through astronomy and physics.

Then people went back to the verse and found the Big Bang inside it.

That's the wrong direction for a prediction.

Shoot the arrow first. Paint the bullseye afterwards. Miracle achieved.

DOES QUR'AN 21:30 SAY THE HEAVENS AND EARTH WERE JOINED AND THEN SEPARATED?

YES.

That is genuinely present in the text.

CAN THAT LANGUAGE BE COMPARED WITH THE BIG BANG?

YES.

At a very broad level, “joined → separated” can certainly be made compatible with a cosmic-origin narrative.

IS THAT THE SAME THING AS DESCRIBING THE MODERN BIG BANG MODEL?

NO.

Modern cosmology does not describe a pre-existing Earth attached to a pre-existing heaven and subsequently pulled apart.

DID CLASSICAL MUSLIM INTERPRETERS UNAMBIGUOUSLY DISCOVER BIG BANG COSMOLOGY FROM THIS VERSE?

NO.

Classical interpretations included separation of heaven and Earth, division into multiple heavens/earths, and the opening of heaven for rain and Earth for vegetation.

DID THE VERSE GENERATE THE MODERN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY?

NO EVIDENCE OF THAT.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

Qur'an 21:30 is broad enough to be retrospectively compared with the Big Bang.

That is not the same as predicting it.

A scientific prophecy becomes substantially less impressive when science has to discover the phenomenon first and scripture explains what it supposedly predicted afterwards.

The Big Bang gave us the interpretation.

The interpretation didn't give us the Big Bang.

case 04

MOUNTAINS AS PEGS

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an described mountains as “pegs” more than 1,400 years ago predicting their deep underground roots and their role in stabilising the Earth's crust.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 78:6–7

THE EARTH // A RESTING PLACE

THE MOUNTAINS // PEGS — AWTĀD

QUR'AN 16:15

God placed firm mountains in the Earth “lest it should shake with you.”

Image description

Look at a mountain.

What you see above ground is only part of it.

Modern geology has discovered that major mountain ranges can have deep crustal roots extending far beneath the surface.

The Qur'an described this reality fourteen centuries ago with one remarkably precise word:

AWTĀD — PEGS.

A peg is not merely something sitting on the ground.

It penetrates beneath the surface. And that is exactly what mountains do.

The Qur'an goes even further. It says God placed mountains in the Earth so that it would not shake with you.

Modern geology has discovered isostasy and the deep structures associated with mountain ranges.

Muhammad had no seismology.

No crustal imaging.

No plate tectonics.

No geological surveys.

Yet the Qur'an described mountains as structures extending into the Earth and contributing to its stability.

How could a man in the 7th century have known the hidden structure beneath mountains?

THE MIRACLE CLAIM //

MODERN GEOLOGY CONFIRMS THE QUR'AN.

Image description

Fact check

"THE PEG ANALOGY SOUNDS GREAT.

Until we ask what the geology actually says."

First, let's give the argument what it deserves:

YES, LARGE MOUNTAIN RANGES CAN HAVE DEEP CRUSTAL ROOTS.

That's real geology.

Through isostasy, thick continental crust beneath major mountain systems can extend substantially deeper than surrounding crust. The USGS explicitly discusses crustal roots supporting mountainous topography.

But here's the problem:

THE ROOT SUPPORTS THE MOUNTAIN.

It isn't a giant geological nail hammered through the crust to stop tectonic plates moving.

Mountain belts commonly arise because the crust is being deformed, through continental collision, subduction, faulting, uplift and crustal thickening.

The Himalayas, for example, exist because the Indian and Eurasian plates continue interacting.

And what accompanies active mountain-building regions?

EARTHQUAKES.

The tectonic forces responsible for building mountains are also capable of generating them.

So:

MOUNTAIN HAS DEEP STRUCTURE

does not logically become

MOUNTAIN PREVENTS EARTH FROM SHAKING.

Those are different propositions.

Worse, apologetic presentations often combine two separate verses:

Q.78:7 gives the metaphor “pegs.”

Q.16:15 gives the anti-shaking function.

Modern geology is then brought in to weld the two together:

PEG → ROOT → ANCHOR → STABILISER → PLATE TECTONICS → MIRACLE.

That's a lot of geology extracted from one metaphor.

And isostasy itself doesn't say mountains are giant anchors stabilising tectonic plates. It concerns gravitational/buoyant equilibrium of the lithosphere; real mountain systems may not even be in perfect isostatic equilibrium.

A mountain having a root doesn't make Earth a tent.

And tectonic plates didn't receive the memo about staying still.

DOES THE QUR'AN CALL MOUNTAINS “PEGS”?

YES.

Q.78:7 uses awtād, commonly translated as pegs/stakes.

CAN LARGE MOUNTAIN RANGES HAVE DEEP CRUSTAL ROOTS?

YES.

This is a genuine feature of isostasy and crustal thickening.

DOES THAT MAKE THE PEG METAPHOR IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPARE WITH MODERN GEOLOGY?

NO.

The visual comparison can certainly be made.

DOES MODERN GEOLOGY SAY THOSE ROOTS FUNCTION LIKE PEGS HAMMERED INTO THE EARTH TO PREVENT THE CRUST OR TECTONIC PLATES FROM MOVING?

NO.

Mountain roots help account for the support and isostatic balance of mountainous topography. Mountain-building itself is intimately connected with tectonic deformation.

DOES QUR'AN 78:7 EXPLICITLY DESCRIBE CRUSTAL THICKENING, ISOSTASY OR PLATE TECTONICS?

NO.

Those scientific concepts are supplied by the modern interpretation.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The Qur'an contains an effective ancient metaphor:

mountains are like pegs.

Modern geology contains a much more complicated phenomenon:

isostasy, crustal thickening and tectonics.

Finding one feature that makes the metaphor look clever does not establish supernatural geological foreknowledge.

A metaphor became a geological theory only after geologists wrote the theory.

case 05

THE barrier between the seas

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an revealed that fresh water and salt water meet but do not mix because an invisible barrier exists between them a phenomenon discovered by modern oceanography.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 55:19–20

TWO BODIES OF WATER

THEY MEET

BETWEEN THEM IS A BARRIER — BARZAKH

THEY DO NOT TRANSGRESS

Related passage:

QUR'AN 25:53 — describes fresh and salty/bitter water and a barzakh between them.

Image description

Modern oceanography has discovered that when different bodies of water meet, they can retain distinct characteristics because of differences in salinity, density and temperature.

Boundaries can form between water masses.

Yet more than 1,400 years ago the Qur'an declared:

“He released the two seas, meeting one another; between them is a barrier which they do not transgress.”

The Qur'an even uses the word:

BARZAKH // BARRIER

How could Muhammad have known that apparently continuous bodies of water could meet while maintaining distinct properties?

There were no salinity probes.

No oceanographic research vessels.

No modern fluid dynamics.

Yet the Qur'an describes a boundary between meeting waters centuries before modern oceanography investigated such phenomena.

THE MIRACLE CLAIM //

THE QUR'AN PREDICTED MODERN OCEANOGRAPHY.

Image description

Fact check

“THERE IS ONE RATHER WET PROBLEM:

THE WATERS DO MIX.”

Fresh water flowing into seawater creates an estuary.

And what is found in an estuary?

BRACKISH WATER.

Brackish water is literally a mixture of fresh water and seawater. NOAA states explicitly that estuaries are places where fresh and salt water mix.

Yes, differences in density and salinity can produce visible or measurable boundaries.

In a salt-wedge estuary, for example, less-dense freshwater can flow above denser seawater, creating a relatively sharp interface.

But NOAA also explains what happens at that interface:

MIXING OCCURS.

The amount and speed depend on tides, wind, river discharge, geometry and other physical conditions. Some estuaries are strongly stratified; others are extensively mixed.

A halocline is therefore not an invisible force field.

It is a region where salinity changes rapidly.

Molecules have not signed a non-aggression treaty.

And there's another problem for the “modern oceanography hidden in the Qur'an” argument:

CLASSICAL COMMENTATORS DIDN'T NEED MODERN OCEANOGRAPHY TO EXPLAIN BARZAKH.

Al-Tabari records interpretations in which the barzakh is simply a separator/barrier, including land separating waters.

Ibn Kathir likewise explains the barrier in this context as a barrier of land separating fresh and salt waters so that each retains its characteristics.

No halocline.

No density gradient.

No oceanographic measurement.

Those arrived with modern science.

And then, remarkably, the “barrier” became oceanography.

DOES THE QUR'AN DESCRIBE WATERS AND A BARZAKH BETWEEN THEM?

YES.

That language is genuinely present in Q.55:19–20.

CAN DIFFERENT WATER MASSES FORM DISTINCT BOUNDARIES?

YES.

Differences in salinity and density can produce stratification and sharp gradients.

DO FRESH AND SALT WATER FAIL TO MIX?

NO.

They mix continuously in estuaries, producing brackish water. The extent of mixing varies with physical conditions.

DOES “BARZAKH” SPECIFY A HALOCLINE, DENSITY GRADIENT OR MODERN OCEANOGRAPHIC MECHANISM?

NO.

DID CLASSICAL INTERPRETATION UNAMBIGUOUSLY IDENTIFY THE MODERN OCEANOGRAPHIC CLAIM?

NO.

Classical interpretations included an ordinary physical separator such as land.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The interesting scientific phenomenon is real:

different water masses can meet while temporarily retaining different properties.

The popular miracle version —

“two seas meet but don't mix because an invisible barrier keeps them apart”

— is not what oceanography says.

They meet. They mix. We even have a name for the mixture.

Brackish water.

case 06

iron from space

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an revealed that iron was “sent down” to Earth from space centuries before science discovered the extraterrestrial origin of iron.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 57:25

“And We sent down iron, in which there is great might and benefits for humanity.”

وَأَنزَلْنَا ٱلْحَدِيدَ

WA-ANZALNĀ AL-ḤADĪD // AND WE SENT DOWN IRON

Image description

The Qur'an does not simply say that Allah created iron.

It says:

“WE SENT DOWN IRON.”

Modern astrophysics has revealed something remarkable:

IRON IS COSMIC.

The iron found on Earth ultimately originates from processes involving stars and the material from which our Solar System formed.

Iron is also found in meteorites that literally fall from space.

Yet fourteen centuries ago the Qur'an chose the striking expression:

“WE SENT DOWN IRON.”

Muhammad had no knowledge of stellar nucleosynthesis.

No spectroscopy.

No nuclear physics.

No modern astronomy.

How could a 7th-century man know that the iron beneath our feet ultimately had a cosmic origin?

THE MIRACLE CLAIM //

THE QUR'AN REVEALED THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL ORIGIN OF IRON.

Image description

Fact check

"SENT DOWN” SOUNDS IMPRESSIVE, UNTIL YOU READ THE REST OF THE SENTENCE."

Qur'an 57:25 doesn't only say:

“WE SENT DOWN IRON.”

A few words earlier, it says God also “sent down” the Scripture and the balance.

So if anzalnā proves that iron physically arrived from outer space...

where exactly was the celestial warehouse containing the weighing scales?

“Sent down” in Qur'anic language does not automatically mean:

THIS OBJECT PHYSICALLY FELL FROM SPACE.

And the classical interpretation makes the problem worse for the miracle argument.

AL-TABARI discusses iron primarily in terms of its strength and usefulness to humans, weapons, tools, digging and other practical uses.

He does not announce:

“IRON WAS SYNTHESISED IN STARS.”

Nor does the verse mention:

STARS.

SUPERNOVAE.

NUCLEOSYNTHESIS.

METEORITES.

PLANETARY FORMATION.

Those concepts came from modern science.

Then they were attached retrospectively to the words “sent down.”

And there is another problem.

The enormous amount of iron inside Earth isn't explained simply by saying:

“Meteorites dropped iron onto an already finished planet.”

Iron was incorporated into the material from which Earth formed, and during early planetary differentiation much of it segregated toward Earth's core. NASA literature discusses Earth's core formation in terms of iron-rich material during planetary accretion and differentiation.

So:

IRON HAS A COSMIC ORIGIN

is scientifically reasonable.

But:

QUR'AN 57:25 PREDICTED STELLAR NUCLEOSYNTHESIS

is an entirely different claim.

Two words acquired an astrophysics degree fourteen centuries later.

DOES QUR'AN 57:25 SAY GOD “SENT DOWN” IRON?

YES.

IS IRON ULTIMATELY COSMIC IN ORIGIN?

YES.

Earth formed from material originating in the early Solar System, and iron-rich meteorites also genuinely reach Earth from space.

DOES “SENT DOWN” SPECIFY STELLAR NUCLEOSYNTHESIS OR METEORITIC DELIVERY?

NO.

IS “SENT DOWN” USED IN THE SAME VERSE FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN IRON?

YES.

The Scripture and balance are also described using “sent down” language.

DID CLASSICAL EXEGESIS IDENTIFY STELLAR NUCLEOSYNTHESIS IN THIS VERSE?

NOT IN THE CLASSICAL COMMENTARIES EXAMINED HERE.

Al-Tabari discusses iron's strength and practical benefits rather than an astronomical origin.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The science is fascinating:

the atoms in our world have a cosmic history.

But Qur'an 57:25 doesn't explain that history.

It says iron was “sent down.”

Modern astrophysics supplied everything else.

The stars made the iron.

Science discovered how.

The miracle appeared in the translation afterwards.

case 07

THE fingerprint miracle

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an revealed the uniqueness of human fingerprints more than 1,400 years ago centuries before fingerprints became a scientific method of identification.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 75:3–4

“Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?”

“Yes indeed! We are able even to restore his fingertips.”

Image description

Why does the Qur'an specifically mention the fingertips?

Modern forensic science has discovered that fingerprints provide an extraordinarily powerful means of individual identification.

Even identical twins do not have identical fingerprints.

Yet when discussing the resurrection, the Qur'an doesn't merely say that Allah can reconstruct the human body.

It singles out:

THE FINGERTIPS.

More than fourteen centuries ago.

Long before fingerprint databases.

Long before forensic identification.

Long before modern biometric science.

The implication is remarkable:

Allah can reconstruct every human being down to the unique identifying detail contained in the fingertips.

How could Muhammad have understood the special individual significance of fingertips centuries before modern forensic science?

THE MIRACLE CLAIM //

THE QUR'AN ANTICIPATED THE UNIQUENESS OF FINGERPRINTS.

Image description

Fact check

“THERE'S A SMALL DETAIL MISSING FROM THE “FINGERPRINT MIRACLE.”

THE VERSE NEVER MENTIONS FINGERPRINTS.

It mentions fingertips.

No ridges.

No loops.

No whorls.

No uniqueness.

No identification.

The surrounding passage isn't discussing biometrics either.

It's discussing resurrection:

Can God reconstruct a dead human being?

The answer is essentially:

Yes, even down to the fingers.

And now comes the historical problem.

What did interpreters see in the verse before fingerprint science became famous?

Al-Tabari records explanations attributed to early authorities including Ibn Abbas, Ikrimah, al-Hasan and Qatadah.

Their discussion concerns God being able to reconstruct or even reshape the fingers themselves, including explanations that God could have made them joined together like an animal's hoof instead of separate, functional fingers.

FINGERPRINT IDENTIFICATION?

Not the point of those interpretations.

The scientific history is also revealing.

Fingerprints really are highly distinctive and persistent. Modern forensic systems exploit ridge patterns and minutiae for identification.

But the scientific development came later.

Purkinje scientifically classified fingerprint patterns in 1823, and fingerprint identification developed further during the nineteenth century.

Then the modern reader returns to:

“Fingertips”

and discovers:

“Fingerprint science.”

That's an impressive upgrade.

Unfortunately, the upgrade arrived after the discovery.

DOES QUR'AN 75:4 SPECIFICALLY MENTION FINGERTIPS?

YES.

ARE FINGERPRINTS DISTINCTIVE ENOUGH TO BE USED FOR HUMAN IDENTIFICATION?

YES.

DOES THE VERSE SAY THAT FINGERPRINT PATTERNS ARE UNIQUE?

NO.

DOES IT DESCRIBE FRICTION RIDGES, PATTERNS OR BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION?

NO.

IS THE PASSAGE PRIMARILY ABOUT FORENSIC SCIENCE?

NO.

It is explicitly an argument about God's ability to reconstruct humans at the resurrection.

DID EARLY CLASSICAL INTERPRETATION IDENTIFY FINGERPRINT UNIQUENESS AS THE SCIENTIFIC SECRET OF THE VERSE?

NOT IN THE EARLY TAFSIR EXAMINED HERE.

Al-Tabari's material discusses the reconstruction and form of the fingers, not forensic fingerprint identification.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The Qur'an mentions fingertips.

Science later discovered the forensic significance of fingerprints.

Those statements are both true.

The miracle claim is the bridge built between them afterwards.

Mentioning a fingertip is not the same thing as predicting biometric identification.

Otherwise mentioning an eye would count as predicting retinal scanning.

pain receptors in the skin

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an revealed that the sensation of pain is located in the skin more than 1,400 years ago centuries before scientists discovered pain receptors.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 4:56

SKIN IS BURNED

SKIN IS REPLACED

SO THEY MAY TASTE THE PUNISHMENT

“Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment.”

Image description

Why does the Qur'an specifically say that the skin must be replaced?

Modern medicine has discovered that the skin contains specialised sensory nerve endings called nociceptors, which detect potentially damaging heat, pressure and chemicals.

Severe burns can destroy nerve endings in damaged skin, reducing sensation in areas of full-thickness injury.

Yet fourteen centuries ago, the Qur'an described unbelievers being burned in Hell and then given new skin so that they could continue to experience the punishment.

The wording is remarkably specific:

BURN THE SKIN → REPLACE THE SKIN → PAIN CONTINUES

Muhammad had no neuroscience.

No histology.

No knowledge of nociceptors.

Yet the Qur'an appears to connect the skin directly with the ability to experience burning pain.

THE MIRACLE CLAIM //

THE QUR'AN ANTICIPATED THE DISCOVERY OF PAIN RECEPTORS.

Image description

Fact check

"YES, THE SKIN FEELS PAIN."

Humanity did not need neuroscience to discover that. Touch fire. Skin hurts.Destroy tissue badly enough and sensation changes. That's an observable human experience, not hidden microscopic knowledge.

More importantly, the popular miracle argument quietly exaggerates the science.

PAIN RECEPTORS ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE TO THE SKIN.

Nociceptive nerve endings also occur in muscles, joints, viscera and other deep tissues. Modern reviews explicitly describe nociceptors throughout these tissues.

And pain itself isn't physically “stored in the skin.”

Nociceptors detect potentially harmful stimuli and transmit signals through the nervous system; the resulting experience of pain involves processing by the central nervous system.

Then comes the historical test.

What did classical Muslim scholars see in this verse?

AL-TABARI discusses precisely why skins are replaced so punishment can continue. But his commentary contains competing explanations about whether the skin itself experiences pain or whether burning it allows torment to reach the experiencing person.

IBN KATHIR likewise explains the verse as continuous punishment: when the skin is consumed, it is replaced and the torment begins again. No nociceptors. No sensory neurons. No neurological discovery.

So what happened?

Ancient text:

BURNED SKIN HURTS.

Modern neuroscience:

NOCICEPTORS.

Modern apologetics:

There they are!

That's not prediction.

That's giving an ancient observation a modern anatomical vocabulary after the anatomy was discovered.

DOES QUR'AN 4:56 CONNECT SKIN WITH EXPERIENCING BURNING PUNISHMENT?

YES.

Explicitly.

DOES HUMAN SKIN CONTAIN NOCICEPTORS?

YES.

Skin contains specialised sensory neurons responsive to damaging thermal, mechanical and chemical stimuli.

ARE NOCICEPTORS FOUND ONLY IN THE SKIN?

NO.

They also innervate muscles, joints, viscera and other tissues.

DOES THE VERSE DESCRIBE NOCICEPTORS, NERVES OR THE NEURAL MECHANISM OF PAIN?

NO.

DID CLASSICAL COMMENTATORS IDENTIFY A HIDDEN DISCOVERY ABOUT PAIN RECEPTORS?

NOT IN THE CLASSICAL COMMENTARIES EXAMINED HERE.

They interpreted the passage as describing the continuation of punishment when burned skin is replaced.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

The Qur'an correctly reflects something humans have known rather painfully for a very long time:

burning skin hurts.

Modern neuroscience explains why in vastly greater detail.

The verse doesn't.

You don't need divine revelation to discover that fire hurts.

A campfire will happily peer-review the experiment.

everything in pairs

THE MIRACLE CLAIM :

The Qur'an revealed that everything in creation exists in pairs, a universal principle only later uncovered by modern biology and physics.

THE SOURCE :

QUR'AN 51:49

“And of everything We created pairs, so that perhaps you may remember.”

QUR'AN 36:36

“Glory be to the One Who created all pairs from what the earth produces, from themselves, and from what they do not know.”

Image description

Look at creation.

MALE // FEMALE

POSITIVE // NEGATIVE

MATTER // ANTIMATTER

NORTH // SOUTH

Modern science continually discovers complementary structures and opposing properties throughout nature.

Yet more than fourteen centuries ago the Qur'an declared:

“OF EVERYTHING WE CREATED PAIRS.”

Qur'an 36:36 goes even further:

“…and from that which they do not know.”

In other words, the Qur'an was not merely talking about the obvious male and female pairs humans could already observe.

It pointed toward pairs still unknown to humanity.

Muhammad knew nothing about antimatter.

Nothing about subatomic particles.

Nothing about electric charge.

Nothing about modern particle physics.

Yet the Qur'an announced a universal principle of paired creation.

THE MIRACLE CLAIM //

MODERN SCIENCE DISCOVERED THE PAIRS THE QUR'AN HAD ALREADY PREDICTED.

Image description

Fact check

“THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH CALLING THIS A SCIENTIFIC PREDICTION: PAIR DOESN'T MEAN ONE CONSISTENT SCIENTIFIC THING.”

Look at classical Islamic interpretation.

Al-Tabari explains Q.51:49 using examples such as:

FAITH // DISBELIEF

HAPPINESS // MISERY

GUIDANCE // ERROR

NIGHT // DAY

HEAVEN // EARTH

HUMANS // JINN

Ibn Kathir similarly lists:

SUN // MOON

LAND // SEA

LIGHT // DARKNESS

LIFE // DEATH

PARADISE // HELL

alongside males and females, animals and plants.

That's not particle physics.

It's a theological observation about contrasts, counterparts and categories.

And notice how flexible the game becomes.

A man and woman are called a pair.

Then day and night.

Then matter and antimatter.

Then positive and negative charge.

These are completely different relationships being grouped under one convenient English word:

PAIR.

Worse, nature does not obey a universal rule that everything must occur as two complementary members.

Biology includes organisms capable of asexual reproduction.

Particle physics contains electrically neutral particles.

And matter/antimatter isn't evidence that everything consists of two opposites in the loose sense used by the apologetic argument.

The verse is broad enough that almost anything can be assigned a partner:

HOT? COLD.

LIGHT? DARK.

MATTER? ANTIMATTER.

MONDAY? …FIND IT A FRIEND.

That's not predictive power.

That's classification with unlimited retries.

DOES QUR'AN 51:49 SAY THAT GOD CREATED “PAIRS”?

YES.

DOES QUR'AN 36:36 REFER TO PAIRS UNKNOWN TO ITS AUDIENCE?

YES.

The phrase “what they do not know” genuinely occurs there.

DID CLASSICAL COMMENTATORS UNDERSTAND “PAIRS” AS A TECHNICAL PRINCIPLE OF PARTICLE PHYSICS?

NO.

They applied it broadly to opposites and counterparts such as heaven/earth, night/day, faith/disbelief and life/death.

DOES THE VERSE SPECIFY MATTER/ANTIMATTER, ELECTRIC CHARGE OR SUBATOMIC PARTICLES?

NO.

DOES MODERN SCIENCE ESTABLISH A UNIVERSAL LAW THAT EVERYTHING EXISTS AS EXACTLY TWO COMPLEMENTARY THINGS?

NO.

“Pair” is being stretched across fundamentally different biological, linguistic and physical relationships.

VERDICT //

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE NOT DEMONSTRATED

Pairs exist.

Nobody needed CERN to discover that.

The scientific miracle only appears when an extremely broad ancient statement is retrospectively populated with discoveries made centuries later.

If every new scientific duality counts as a fulfilled prediction, while everything that isn't naturally paired can simply receive a sufficiently creative partner, the claim has become impossible to fail.

And a prediction that cannot fail...

isn't much of a prediction.
