Rushdie. Theo van Gogh. Charlie Hebdo. The Muhammad cartoons. Europe has repeatedly confronted the question of how freely religion can be criticised when criticism carries personal risk.

Hostility toward Muslims as people and criticism of Islam as a belief system are not the same thing. Confusing the two makes both anti-Muslim hatred and legitimate criticism harder to confront.
